Ada Vessalius

Ada Vessalius (エイダベザリウス / Eida Bezariusu sometimes romanized as Ada Bezarius) is a student at Latowidge and the younger sister of Oz Vessalius.

Appearance
Ada has blond hair and emerald green eyes. 10 years before Oz's reappearance from the Abyss, she was a little girl that wore a pink dress and a green jacket. Later she had become an attractive young woman. When she reappears 10 years later in the current timeline, she wears the female Latowidge school uniform. She has three cats named Snowdrop, Dinah, and Kitty. All three are most likely a reference to the three cats at the beginning of "Through the Looking Glass"; Dinah was the mother of Snowdrop and Kitty.

Personality
Oz's little sister who adores him very much. She is soft-spoken and polite. After 10 years she attends Latowidge, a prestigious school for nobles, of which she is a prefect. She keeps in contact with Oscar via letter and causes Oz and co. to sneak into Latowidge as she wrote that she has found a person she likes. It is revealed that she was the one that gave Gilbert his hat. It is hinted that she likes Gilbert or Elliot, but in the later chapters she is seen on a date with Vincent. In Retrace 46, it is known that she is a fan of sorcery, ghosts, torture, the occult and the like as the result of her own attempts in trying to rescue her brother from the Abyss (which didn't work), and this surprised even Vincent. She also has a basement full of her collections.

Oscar Vessalius

Oscar Vessalius (オスカー ベザリウス, Osukā Bezariusu) is Oz and Ada Vessalius's uncle, and a member of Pandora. He is the current Duke of the Vessalius house.

Appearance
Oscar has blonde hair and a goatee. In the first episode, he wore a blouse and black pants but in the Pandora headquarters, he wears the standard Pandora uniform.

Personality
He is always seen as cheerful and bright, just like Oz. He's very protective of Ada as seen when he received a letter from Ada saying that she loves somebody and Oscar set Oz, his friends and himself on a mission to Latowidge (which ended up with people suspecting them to be intruders). He is somewhat a pervert, as explained by Break.

History
He seems to have had a wife and had been wishing for a child. He even had prepared a special camera to once take a picture of his son. Even though his wife's health was bad and she was putting her own life in danger, she wanted to become pregnant as well. It's likely that she became pregnant, but lost her's and the child's life in the progress. Oscar stated that he sees Oz as his son.

Jack Vessalius

Jack Vessalius (Jakku Bezariusu ジャック ベザリウス also known as Jack Bezarius) was the once supposed hero, but in reality the instigator of the Tragedy of Sablier. He was Oswald's best friend, and loved his sister, Lacie.

Appearance

He wears white skin-tight pants with a long green and gold coat and a white ruffled blouse. Jack looks uncannily like an adult Oz with a long golden braid that goes to his thighs. He has long golden eyelashes and emerald eyes like Oz's, but with a different aura. He often wears white gloves over his hands, and in most instances is shown with a pair of white and black boots. He has a pair of deep red earrings (they've also appeared as royal blue on the manga cover, and purple) that Lacie gave to him, the right one having been kept by Lacie and later worn by her for the four months after their reunion, while Jack had worn the left one for their first eight years since meeting. Oswald hands Jack the right earring Lacie had been wearing when he tells him of her death.
Oz and Gilbert meet him when they are taken to the Cheshire Cat's dimension. The "hero" of 100 years ago and the one who "defeated" Glen Baskerville. He is currently residing in Oz's body and can 'possess' Oz and speak through him. When in control, Jack also has full control of Alice's chain power. He is revealed to have some sort of connection with Alice's memories and Gilbert's past.

Personality
Jack is just like Oz, he's almost always happy. He can be serious on occasion but is usually highly active and cheerful. He is decidedly kind, but he is never truly trusted. Something else that's very famous about Jack in particular is that he can give this sharp expression that appears to look right through someone and only shows that person's true personality.
He harbors a grudge against his family because of his twisted years growing up, but hides it away when he is with other people. Lacie is the only person whom he's ever confessed it to. He loves Lacie, and places her above everything else, including his life; eventually, this leads to everyone's involvement, and the near destruction of the world.

Oz Vessalius

Oz(オズ ベザリウス, Ozu Bezarius) is the main character of the series Pandora Hearts and the contractor of the chain Alice the B-Rabbit though in reality he is the true B-Rabbit and was contracted to Jack Vessalius 100 years ago during the Tragedy of Sablier.

Appearance

Oz's body for the majority of the series was identical to the way Jack looked when he first met Lacie and she cut his hair for him, that is because Oz's body really is Jack's. This being said, he appears as a 15-year-old boy, 162 cm tall, with blonde hair and emerald eyes. He often wears a white dress shirt, a gray vest, a red tie, green knee-length pants, and a pair of boots. 10 years ago he wore a green jacket with golden linings, brown knee-length pants, a dress shirt, a red tie and a pair of boots.
Located on his chest is a clock-shaped seal that all illegal contractors have. Each time the Contractor uses the Chain's power, the hand on the clock moves. When it goes through a full rotation, the contractor is dragged down into the deepest level of the Abyss and can never return.
Though it is revealed in Retrace LXX: Oz -Truth-, Oz's true form is that of the Blood-stained Black Rabbit, as that is the reality of Oz's existance. He appears as a rabbit doll that Alice talks to often with when she was in the tower alone.

Personality
He retains a bright, optimistic, mischiveous, and energetic personality. When he was young, he worked hard to gain praise and recognition from his father. However, he had discovered that his father hated him to the point of not wanting to even touch him. After experiencing this, Oz began thinking that there is no guarantee of that in the world. He thought of himself as weak, useless, and, in order to protect people, he could at least remain an obedient child and let harm come his way. Oz likes cute, younger girls and flirts with them frequently, much like Jack. He wished to marry Sharon Rainsworth when they first met. As the story progresses, it is implied that he has started to develop strong feelings towards Alice, but it is not certain that they are completely his feelings. For example, in Retrace 20, Oz calls her "my most precious Alice", but it is not known if these feelings are sincerely his or those of Jack Vessalius that reside in his body. He also has a strong connection to Gilbert, whom he has known since he was ten years old. Gilbert became Oz's servant shortly after they had met.
When Oz was still the rabbit doll, he had no feelings, thoughts, or self; he simply watched the world around him. Although when Alice smiled he felt a warm feeling in him even though Alice was mean. He had thought that Alice was Lacie but quickly found out she was not Lacie but rather her daughter. He still feels nostagic feelings from Alice as she reminds him of Lacie. When he finally got his name "Oz" from Alice, he was given a name and that made his world shine. His 'self' was starting to form everytime Alice called him by his name. He started to think about all the things he wanted to see and wanting to be with Alice. Oz noticed how Alice would change in personality from time to time and that The White Alice would take over The Black Alice's body. He noticed that The White Alice was indeed The Core within herself when he has thought that it disappeared. He then noticed that the Abyss has changed from a beautiful place to a dark place and saw that Alice didn't smile anymore. He then noticed that White Alice had a fragment of Lacie's memories saying that was all she could find and gave it to Oz knowing that Lacie would have wanted him to have it. Oz noticed that the darkness in the Abyss would destory every bit of Lacie so he then instead took the darkness from the Abyss into his body to save the fragments of Lacie's memories. He wanted them to stay alive until 'that person' got them. He didn't mind as she was the one who gave him a beginning. He started to crumble from the darkness he took from the Abyss into his body, but he didn't seem to mind as he would only lose his body in reality but his other, that was in the Abyss, would be fine. The Will became alarmed when Oz started to crumble. When Jack picked him up, he was able to give Jack the memory of Lacie singing to him and Oswald in a field. He told Alice not to be sad, but to smile because she was his 'precious Alice'.

Pandora Hearts

Pandora Hearts (パンドラハーツPandora Hātsu) is a manga series by Jun Mochizuki. Originally starting serialization in the shōnen magazine GFantasy published by Square Enix in June 2006. Currently seventeen volumes have been released in Japan. The manga series was licensed for an English language release by Broccoli Books but has been dropped; it has been licensed by Yen Press since then. It has also been made into an anime version, produced by Xebec. On February 11, 2010, NIS America announced it would release the anime of Pandora Hearts in North America. This series also had 9 OVA's (3 minute per episode), which aired from July 24, 2009 to March 25, 2010.

Plot
Oz Vessalius, One of the Heir of the Duke Houses, has just turned fifteen. His life is rich and carefree, darkened only by the constant absence of his father. At his coming-of-age ceremony, however, everything changes. For no reason that he can discern, he is cast into the prison known as the "Abyss", only to be saved by a "chain" known as Alice, the Bloodstained Black Rabbit or B-Rabbit for short. The mystery begins there as Oz unravels the mystery behind Alice, the Abyss and the strange organization known as Pandora. The series features heavy references to Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and can be considered both fantasy and mystery.

Terminology

Chain (チェイン Chein)
Beings from the Abyss that were at one point human, transformed by the Abyss. They must sign a contract with a human contractor in order to leave the Abyss. Chains involved in illegal contracts must repeatedly consume humans in order to gain power, an agreement between the chain and the contractor. The chain is bound within the contractor and can be called out at will. In return, the contractor provides passage for the chain out of the Abyss. Occasionally, a rare side-effect of making a contract with a chain gives the contractor the ability to never physically age again, although their mind and body still deteriorate in certain ways, and they can still die of natural causes such as old age. In illegal contracts, a clock-like seal appears somewhere on the Contractor's body, over their heart. Each time the chain's powers are drawn upon, the hand on the seal moves like on a clock. Once the hand makes one full rotation, both the contractor and the chain are dragged into the deepest level of the Abyss.
Contractors (契約者 Keiyakusha)
A human who makes a contract with a chain. There are certain procedures to making a contract, but impromptu contracts can also be made, although they are illegal.
Abyss (アヴィス Avisu)
The world that chains come from. It exists in a different dimension from the regular world, and time doesn't truly exist in the Abyss. A person can find themselves in any random time period upon exiting the Abyss. The appearance of the Abyss is somewhat like a broken toy box.
Intention of the Abyss (アヴィスの意志 Avisu no Ishi)
The existence that governs the Abyss. Can sometimes appear in the form of a white rabbit doll covered in blood with big round eyes. The real form of the Intention of the Abyss is similar to Alice, but usually with white hair, a white dress, lavender-coloured eyes, and a crazed expression, generally the opposite of Alice. Apparently the Intention of the Abyss wants Oz and Alice to go back to the Abyss. The Intention of the Abyss and Alice are twins; both were conceived in the human world, and born into the Abyss. The Intention of the Abyss hates Alice and want to destroy her. It is revealed her real name is also Alice.
Four Great Duke Houses (四大公爵家 Yondai Koushaku Ke)
It currently consists of the Vessalius, Rainsworth, Nightray and Barma family. These four houses have been in existence before the Tragedy of Sablier. They founded the Pandora and each hold chains and a door to the Abyss. Of these four houses, the Vessalius and Nightray houses are thought of as exact opposites, like light and dark: the Vessalius house works publicly, while the Nightray house is responsible for doing the backstage work. Before the Tragedy of Sablier occurred, the Vessalius family was only a third class noble family, and thus, not part of the four duke houses. Instead, the fourth house was the Baskerville house - with Glen as the head. When Jack killed Glen for starting the Tragedy of Sablier, the Vessalius family were seen as heroes. And thus, the Vessalius substitute the Baskervilles, as the fourth duke house. Therefore, the Baskervilles holds the fifth door to the abyss.
Pandora (パンドラ Pandora)
An organization founded by the four duke houses. It specializes in research regarding the Abyss.
The Tragedy of Sablier (サブリエの悲劇 Saburie no Higeki)
The city of Sablier was once the capital city of the Pandora Hearts universe. However, 100 years ago, for unknown reasons, Glen Baskerville used a ritual to send the entire city, with its citizens, into the Abyss. Glen was then supposedly killed by Jack.
Doors
Doors are gates to the Abyss that the four duke houses control. Each house has control over one, with the Baskerville's holding the last, fifth Door. It is revealed in Retrace 41 that all along, the Baskerville's door was hidden in Sablier, which is under Pandora's control. Yet, Pandora had never thought to look within Sablier to find it.
Blood Sealing Mirrors An item used to make a legal contract. Instead of the contractor drinking the blood of the chain, the blood gets absorbed into the mirror where a seal is formed, keeping the seal off of the person. If the mirror is broken, you can lose the contract to the chain. It also has a limit on the power you can use.

Funtom Company

Chocolate.png
Funtom's chocolate

Funtom Company is a confectionery (i.e. candy) toy manufacturing company owned by Ciel Phantomhive. It is a growing enterprise strongly supported by the wealthy and Bourgeoisie.
When first brought attention to, it is noted that its reputation swiftly grew to be notorious in a little under three years. It specializes in original novelties unseen before by other classes.
It is hugely famous where 'there isn't a day when you don't see that name' and possibly every single person would recognize the name. It is "boasted about all over the world". Harold West even calls it "the candy king". The company's impressive products would seem to enslave children to crave for more.
It is noted that Ciel, through talented, relatively sly, business, is able to create and manage sister Funtom Companies at the same time.

Products
  • Bitter Rabbit
  • A Nintendo DS looking toy
  • Noah's Ark
  • Chocolate

Phantomhive

Phantomhive Family Crest.jpg
Phantomhive Family Crest

Phantomhive is the name of the family that is directly controlled by Queen Victoria. It is a secret executive agency of England and is strictly confidential. Often called the "Queen's Watch Dogs" or the "Evil Noblemen", they have served the Queen for generations.
Phantomhive is counted as nobility and the head of the household has the rightful position of being the Earl.

Overview

As said by Arthur Randall, the Phantomhive's task is neither blithe or easy and explains that every country has a surface world but there is always an underworld as well; Great Britain is no exception. The Phantomhive is a dark agency that conceals all of the Royal Family's wrongdoings and eliminates every thread linking to the Royal Family's involvement, no matter how dirty the method.
The Phantomhive family has the power to control and manage everything in the underworld of Britain and maintain the division between the underworld and surface world. An interference with the regular society usually opts the Queen to rely on the Phantomhives to annihilate it as shown when the Queen orders Ciel to get rid of Jack the Ripper, solve the case of Anglo-Indians being harassed, recover the missing children, and discover the reason behind the illegal human experimentation.
In general, the Phantomhives are a secret committee that carries out special duties. Because of that, the funds for their activities and their rewards cannot be included in the nation budget. Thus, the Scotland Yard members come personally to deliver the genuinely bribe money to the Phantomhives.

Phantomhive Manor

The Phantomhive manor is located in a mist-covered forest on the outskirts of London. It is the base of operations for the Phantomhive household. It was previously burned on Ciel's tenth birthday, causing the deaths of Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive. However, the manor was later effortlessly rebuilt by Sebastian Michaelis.

Pluto (プルートゥ, Purūtu)

Pluto (プルートゥ, Purūtu), nicknamed Plu-Plu, is asupernatural dog that the Phantomhive household picks up in the anime.
Devil human.png

Character Outline

In his human form, Pluto has shoulder-length grey/silver hair, red eyes, and fangs. His pupils are also slitted and he has black toenails. He is often shown nude in his human form, as he changes back and forth from his demon hound form to his human form frequently. Later, though, he is shown wearing a suit more frequently.
When in his demon hound form, he becomes a monstrous dog, easily towering over Sebastian Michaelis and even tall humans. He has white fur, red pupils, black sclera and long, black nails.
He does not speak, even in his human form, and simply makes dog-like sounds, such as whining noises, howling and barking. Even when in his human form, he retains dog-like characteristics, such as continuing to run around on all fours and using his nose to find things. He can turn into his dog form upon will or more unintentionally, such as when excited.

Finnian (フィニアン, Finian)

Finnian (フィニアン, Finian), often nicknamed "Finny", is the gardener of the Phantomhive household.

Appearance
Finnian has short, messy, strawberry-blond hair, which he keeps clipped back with 5 red bobby pins, two on his right and three on his left. He has large, turquoise green eyes, and pale skin. He usually wears a straw hat, a plain top with red piping around the collar and plaid pants along with black knee-high boots. It is later revealed that the reason he wears the hat around his neck is because it hides a tattoo of "S-012," left over from the days when he was used as an experiment for testing injections. In the manga he is seen bald when first picked up by Ciel and Sebastian.

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, he has a great deal of respect, and a bit of fear for Sebastian Michaelis. He is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel, who he views as a savior of sorts.
He is a child-like character, prone to breaking out into tears whenever he does something wrong. According to Sebastian, he is an idiot with a bad memory that makes Sebastian feel a "deep emotion that goes beyond anger." He is exceptionally strong, and has to be very careful when doing work that utilizes his strength, or he will break or damage something. He enjoys his work very much, loves being outside, and works hard to please Sebastian and Ciel. He also said that if it were up to him what the garden looked like, he would "make it as cool as a combo robot."

History
Little is known about Finnian's past other than that he was experimented on, and that his captors killed his friends, locked him up and kept him inside. They are responsible for the tattoo on the back of his neck and the injections that are likely the cause of his super-human strength. In his confinement, he was only given a small window, through which a bird appeared to him on a frequent basis.
Slightly over a year ago, Ciel picked up Finnian and allowed him to work as a gardener, which he loves doing because he used to not be allowed to go outside. It is for this reason that Finnian is exceptionally loyal to Ciel. It's unclear precisely what Finnian means by being "picked up." In the anime, it is changed so Ciel didn't pick him up, but rather, he was recruited by Sebastian. Also, he used to have a pet bird, but his super-strength ended up killing it while petting it.

Baldroy (バルドロイ, Barudoroi)

Baldroy or Bardroy (バルドロイ, Barudoroi), often nicknamed Baldo or Bard, is the chef of the Phantomhive household.
Bardroy.png

Appearance
Baldroy is an American with dirty blond hair and blue-grey eyes. He's almost always seen with a cigarette dangling out of his mouth, goggles hanging loosely around his neck and wearing a typical chef's outfit, including a long apron.

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, he has a great deal of respect, and a bit of fear, for Sebastian Michaelis. He is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel, and does his best to please both.
He is always excited about being able to help, and works hard to attempt to be of use, typically with disastrous results. He usually cooks with a flamethrower or blowtorch, which usually results in some form of explosion. Sebastian states that he is an idiot, whose cooking results are 80 percent charcoal and 20 percent broken dishes.
When Ciel and Sebastian are not around, he seems to be in charge of the other servants to a certain degree, such as when he issued orders for the attack against the first-tier circus members.
Bardroy is not used to the slow pace of the Phantomhive Manor. He cooks with blowtorches and like because he's used to having all his food ready quickly, like when he was in the war before Sebastian found him.

History
Not much is known about his past, other than he is an American who was involved in war. In the anime, this information is expanded to include that he was a sergeant in an army, and was shown to have exceptional planning, foresight and fighting skills. After a particularly bad fight, where he was the only survivor, Sebastian approached him and offered him a job at the Phantomhive manor.

As a result of these experiences, he tends to keep high-powered weapons on hand and puts things in terms of war, such as when he called mice "the enemy," the manor "the battlefield," and the hunt to catch them "a fight."
Like the others, he is recruited by Sebastian, but it is unknown precisely why he chose to go work for Ciel Phantomhive.

Mey-Rin

Mey-Rin.jpg

Mey-Rin (メイリン, Meirin) is the maid of the Phantomhive household.

Appearance

Mey-Rin has red colored hair and usually wears thick, broken glasses that hide her hazel eyes. Her hair is rather long, but she wears it tied up high on her head. She wears a typical maid's outfit; blue dress with matching buttons and white pinafore with ruffles around the shoulders. She wears a lacy frill in her hair, brown laced-up, knee-high boots, and long, black stockings that are held up with a garter belt.

Personality

Like the other Phantomhive servants, Mey-Rin has a great deal of respect for and a slight fear of Sebastian Michaelis. She also seems to have a bit of a crush on Sebastian as she frequently blushes and becomes even clumsier when in his presence. She is also exceedingly loyal to Ciel, and does her best to please the both of them.
Mey-Rin is exceptionally clumsy, frequently tripping, knocking things over, and breaking many of the manor's things as a result. According to Sebastian, her idiocy is the problem, not her poor eyesight. He also states that he has heard that clumsy maids have charm, but not that he can see. He also adds that she makes him recall what murderous intent feels like.

History

Mey-Rin used to be, and still is an incredible sniper due to her extreme far-sightedness. She claims that she prefers not to use a scope, and in her previous job, her boss stated that being a sniper was the only way to put her far-sightedness to use. As a result, she can wield high-powered rifles, hand-guns and other firearms. Once she begins working for Ciel, she seems pleased to get to wear skirts and the glasses he purchased for her, which is part of the reason why she does not buy new glasses. Without them, she is able to see great distances clearly, aiding in her ability to be a sniper.
